And an A tune (in AEAC#) called Happy Hollow from Marcus Martin, here played and then played real slow by Erynn and Carl.
A couple of lovely suggestions. Sailing Over England in D, here played at a session fiddled by Rachel Eddy and Adam Hurt - just beautiful! It comes from the playing of Lee Triplett, which can be heard over here on Slippery Hill in a much more straightforward form. Here's a nice clear version over on Slippery Hill: Valley Forge played by Jon Bekoff And with Tricia Spencer and friends at a high energy Clifftop jam, starting on the low bit usually (?) thought of as the C part: Speaking of Tricia, here she is with Howard playing and then teaching Porter's Reel. At 22:03 she shows the wonderful chordal seconding she does behind tunes. A couple lovely tunes played lots at old-time summer camp, both in G... Here's Tommy Jarrell playing it, such rhythm and energy! And Paul Brown's wonderfully informative and entertaining Across the Blueridge programme about the history and meaning and everything behind this tune is here. Really well worth a listen!
Just as we were leaving last month, the question of a tune to learn for the next time came up. Now, we've made such attempts before and keep forgetting what we were planning but not this time! This was Chris Aggs' suggestion, and a lovely tune it is. In C. With three parts. After an absence of about two and a half years, we've revived the session in yet another new home, The Pelham Arms, which is welcoming, spacious, and accoustically good - pretty ideal.
For those counting, this is now our fifth venue: John Harvey -> Black Horse -> Kings Head -> The Lamb -> John Harvey -> Pelham Arms A very lively and enjoyable session it was, too, as if we'd never stopped playing together! As many of you know, the brilliant landlord at the Lamb, Alec, who has been so welcoming -- and who has in fact turned the Lamb into a real music venue during his time there -- is leaving at the end of February. He doesn't yet know who will be taking over as landlord, so we'll have to wait and see whether or not our session can continue there. For the time being, we are not planning to meet in March. More news as we know it.
EDIT: Returned to John Harvey until March 2020...
It's been ages since we did any tunes in C, and some of us have been wanting to play some of these great tunes so let's give it a go in September, right at the beginning of the session for those who want to.
Some possibilities: - Billy in the Lowground - Wagoner One-Step - Texas Gals - Cranberry Rock - Hogskin - Farewell Trion Suggest more tunes here in the comments! Let's see if this works. If we start getting too many offers of fake Nikes from China again, I'll have to close it down but it would be nice to have an interactive place where we can propose tunes and things, and I think this should serve that purpose if we all use the Comments function.
So, to start the ball rolling, I'll admit I can't remember any of the tunes we said last month we'd definitely learn for this time! But we have in the past spoken of Squirrel Hunters and Half-Past Four, so maybe have a go this week.... |
